[week 2] three connection problems

To span the desired distance of 9 meters a solid wood beam will not be very effective. Therefore a composition of different parts is desired with standard sizes of for example 4.8 meter. A common beam for the Passive House concept is the wooden FJI beam. This product uses glue which should be avoided in a 100% Cradle to Cradle building.

The three connection problems that arise are:

  • flange-web: this connection will need to withstand diagonal tension forces
  • flange-flange: the top flange will be compresses due to the bending moment and the down flange will be under tension
  • web-web: a connection is not totally necessary because there are no compression or tension forces but connection the web will transfer shear forces and guarantee a smooth force distribution

These problems are being solved with possible designs.
